About the Silver Cloud II:
In 1949, Rolls-Royce promotional literature proclaimed, "In the
less formal mood of today, however, many who still require all that
Rolls-Royce traditionally bestows prefer to drive themselves." The
Silver Dawn, the first ever Rolls-Royce to be offered with factory
standard bodywork, was the company's first attempt to deliver on
that mission statement, but in 1955 the company made a much more
significant stride forward with the all-new Silver Cloud. A new
chassis frame that was both lower and longer allowed in-house
designers to fashion a far roomier and more elegant factory
standard body with a lower stance and less formal, gently tapering
profile.
However, it was not until 1959 that Rolls-Royce really delivered
the complete package by replacing the aging 4566cc 6-cylinder
engine with its first V-8, an all-aluminum overhead-valve unit of
6230cc, to create the Silver Cloud II, a true driver's car that was
an equal delight whether at the helm or cossetted in the rear in
true limousine style. British magazine Autosport said of the Cloud
II that it "gives high-speed travel in silence and luxury, while
the driver and passengers enjoy the sense of wellbeing that only
the best British craftsmanship can give." Just as significant as
these words was that fact that this review appeared in a
motor-racing magazine, for with approximately 25% more power, the
V-8 Cloud II delivered genuine sports car performance with an
effortless 104 MPH. In addition, the power steering that was an
option on the earlier incarnation was now standard, along with a
4-speed automatic transmission and improvements to heating and
ventilation.
