In the late '60s, Ford built the Cobra Jet, a Factory-Produced Drag
Racer, and Street Dominator.
With the Muscle Car horsepower race escalating for the 1968 season,
Ford management was asked to show up at the test track by Ford
dealer and racer Bob Tasca. Tasca and his in-house engine expert
John Healey created the now famous engine recipe by mixing
high-flowing 427cylinder heads with the stout bottom-end of a FE
428 to create the "Cobra Jet". Ford Motor Company introduced its
all-new 428-cubic inch Cobra Jet engine to the public. With 335 hp,
the potent 428 CJ offered a huge leap in power over the smaller
390-cube V8, which was the top Mustang engine for 1967. Impressed
by the performance of the Cobra Jet engine in a Mustang, the
decision was made by Ford to build 50 now-famed 'Lightweight
Factory Mustang Drag Racers' to dominate Super Stock competition.
Ford assigned three VIN numbers to these 50 cars so that, with
engine swaps, they could run in the different classes. This car
came with the "R" engine version. VIN numbers ranged from
8F02R135007 to 8F02R135056 and the first batch of 18 were scheduled
for assembly on December 30, 1967. The actual build date of this
car was December 26, 1967. These cars are often referred to as 135
cars or VIN series cars. This stunning example is 8F02R135009 which
was the third Cobra Jet Mustang off the assembly line with a total
production of fifty cars. All Fifty came from the factory painted
Wimbledon White with a black vinyl interior and radio delete. They
were equipped with a heavy duty 4-speed manual transmission, manual
drum brakes, 428ci Cobra Jet engine with an aluminum intake, a
3.89: 1 rear axle ratio (even though the door tags indicate 3.25:1,
and no racing stripes. Gas Ronda, Don Nicholson, Hubert Platt, and
Al Joniec raced them for Ford at the 1968 NHRA Winter Nationals
held February 2-4, 1968. Paul Harvey Ford in Indianapolis, Indiana
took delivery of a total of nine Lightweight Mustangs. This vehicle
was one of those nine cars. Paul Harvey Ford used them for
Marketing and raced them at the track as well. This Mustang spent
most of its life in Indiana being raced at local races and then
later it found its way to Colorado where it continued to be raced.
The car was then sold and moved to Georgia. The previous owner
found the complete car in Georgia including the original motor with
the Vin stamped head. The head was not on the motor at the time I
bought the car. The motor was removed from the car and completely
freshened up. A new hydraulic cam, lifters, and custom pushrods
were installed. All new bearings were installed, and the cylinder
bores were flex honed. The pistons were like new and received new
rings. The crank was washed, measured, and micro polished. A new
oil pump was installed. The heads were pressure tested. They
removed an improperly installed valve seat and custom made one new
exhaust seat. Finally, the motor was dyno tested. The motor made
494 pounds of torque and 407 horsepower. Dyno sheets will be
included with the sale of the vehicle. The engine bay was
completely detailed when the engine was removed using many concours
and the highest quality reproduction parts available.
The Holy Grail of Ford Racing history. A must have for any serious
Ford Collection.
