design and practicality... makes the FJ40 a true classic.
Driving.ca website, 2015 Classic is an oft-used accolade for the
F40. As Jalopnik writer, Andrew Maness, put it: By so many
standards, the FJ40 Land Cruiser is the definitive 20th century
4x4. With an international pedigree like a Land Rover, the rugged
simplicity of a Jeep, and swagger like an old Bronco, the FJ is a
greatest hits album of classic trucks. Fun to look at, sure, but
driving one will take your appreciation to a whole new level. He
continued: It's a wonderfully simple vehicle that is much more than
the sum of its parts, not only due to the vehicle's capabilities,
but because of the things people associate with it: Toughness,
adventurousness, reliability, style... the qualities of an FJ40
read like the Tinder profile of someone you'd bring home to your
parents. The largely unmodified, 26,000-mile FJ 40 hardtop, was
built in May of 1972. It is offered here in beige over
black-and-beige, and delivers on all those traits mentioned above.
It's an excellent example of an original FJ. The exterior paint, in
what might be fairly called desert tan, is free of damage, dents,
dings or any evidence of excessive off-road use. The roof is
painted in white to reflect sunlight. This FJ has not been abused.
The extended front bumper with provisions for a winch, tool
storage, and the installed auxiliary driving lights, adds an
increased measure to the legendary FJ ruggedness. In the same way,
the roof-mounted safari rack (with ladder access) is an upgrade.
The aftermarket white 8-spoke wheels are in unblemished condition
and are mounted with Kumho raised-white-letter all-terrain tires.
(The rear-mounted spare is unmatching.) The cabin glass is clear
and free of cracks, as are the lighting lenses fore and aft. The
factory side-mounted radio antenna is in place. All factory badges
and emblems are similarly properly located and in excellent
condition. Inside, the interior is virtually all original including
the two rear center-facing bench seats and the front split-bench.
Black-vinyl upholstery is free of excessive wear and there are no
rips or tears in the material. The characteristic simplicity of the
dashboard instruments is unaltered down to and including the metal
data plate with transmission operating instructions. The
floor-mounted three-speed manual shifter retains its factory
shift-pattern knob. The FJ's steering wheel center emblem shows age
patina. The simple factory radio has been retained. Rubber floor
coverings are also original. A pop-up sunroof and a fire
extinguisher are mounted. Under the hood, the original 3.8-lier
inline 6-cylinder engine remains in place in a tidy, but not highly
detailed engine bay. All associated components appear to be
properly located and present. (Owner's and service
manuals-including the Haynes repair manual-together with some spare
parts accompany the sale.) Engine-cooling hoses and plug wires have
been upgraded and a fresh battery is also in place, as are factory
data plates. The undercarriage is free from any obvious off-roading
damage; no dented exhaust pipes or missing components. Newer lifted
shock absorbers are mounted. Only light surface rust is present on
some un-coated undercarriage surfaces. The truck was purchased
recently out of Ohio with a full paint restoration, new leaf
springs/shocks, and 4-wheel disc brake conversion. Most recently, a
new carburetor, new rotor and distributor cap were i
