Vehicle Description
2002 Mercedes Benz CLK55 AMG Convertible
Altogether, the AMG stands for "Aufrecht Melcher Groaspach." Which
makes a bit more sense than some of the other explanations car
shoppers had come up with! The AMG trims are higher trims in a
Mercedes-Benz vehicle, and generally have more power, better
performance, and more features than a trim that is not AMG.
This car for consignment at one point in the early 2000's was the
fastest Mercedes one could buy. A hand assembled 5.4 liter V8 with
weight matched connecting rods and pistons, lightweight chain
driven SOHC and 2 spark plugs per cylinder, and tuned exhaust
delivers a healthy 362hp for this light weight vehicle. Add on air
dams and fairings for the exterior, and tiptronic shift option from
the console, plus the drop top, and you will have enough
performance to go around, plus the fun of a convertible.
Exterior
All panels bathed in brilliant Mercedes Benz silver (what other
color is there to have?), a smoothed over swept back grille and
molded onto the body oval headlights side rocker fairings and
rounded molded in taillights, this car can cut through the wind to
make maximum use of its awesome power. Gaps are well minded and all
trimmings are silver for that uniform look. Some slight rust
bubbling can be seen on the lower doors just above the rocker
fairing and passenger quarter just above the bumper, and a few
scratches throughout mostly scuffles with high curbs. A black
canvas convertible top is on this version, and it has a glass rear
window, as well as being power up and down. 18 inch wheels all
polished with a ring of outer bolts for added effect, are firmly
planted on all 4 corners.
Interior
Sculpted paneled doors lead us to the luxurious and sporty
interior. There are power seat adjustments on each panel. Inside
low back buckets with large oversized headrests are in anthracite
leather and looking good. In back is a tight 2 plus 2 bench. A
wonderful curved center console races past the front seats, and
houses the power window toggles, power top Espies handling option
mode switch, and shift lever with the tiptronic shift option. The
console then rides gently into the center of the dash where we can
see a large screen for the Pioneer radio/CD/Bluetooth/Satellite
Capable display and climate controls above. A simple display for
the instruments which have round analog displays with digital
odometer and trip odometers. The steering wheel has plenty of
buttons to easily control the radio phone and display from the
wheel with your fingertips. Seat heaters for both seats are on this
car as well. Pristine black carpeting floods the floors and has
nice rubber protective mats above it.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the 5.4 liter V8 heart with all its AMG trappings
for performance. Electronic Fuel Injection feeds fossils to it, and
on back is a 5-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle has a
3.06 final drive ratio.
Undercarriage
Underneath is just fab with just a smattering of surface rust on
the usual suspects, clean floorpans and many ground effects panels
for a smooth undercarriage airflow. Very little if any road dirt is
seen, and all is well under here. Independent coil springs all
around for the suspension, and power disc brakes hook you up on all
4 corners.
Drive-Ability
Just wonderful for a quick start, and comfortable cruise, with
plenty of power available for when you want to get a little goosey
with your boot. Handles like it's on a track for trains, and a
smooth straight stopper. All functions are functioning well.
This car is nicely preserved, shows just a bit of age with the
small areas of rust bubbling, slightly fogged headlights which can
be polished too clear, and some scratches. It performs well, and is
all functional with the power options, and climate controls.
