Vehicle Description
Gordon Buehrig originally conceived the brilliant Cord 810/812 as a
"baby Duesenberg" that would carry E.L. Cord's renowned flagship
brand beyond the 1930s. But a faltering economy led to Duesenberg's
demise, so E.L. Cord instead utilized the design to revive his
eponymous car company. The highly advanced Cord 810 and 812 were
years ahead of their time, featuring semi-monocoque construction,
front-wheel drive, and a pre-select gearbox. However, it was the
styling that truly set it apart. The fascinating, unconventional
shape eschewed contemporary norms such as running boards and
upright chrome radiator shells. Buehrig's Cord featured curvaceous,
aerodynamic fenders with hideaway headlights, slab-sided bodywork
with hidden running boards, and the distinct coffin-shaped hood
with wraparound "grille" slats. It is widely recognized as one of
the most significant works in automobile design history and a
timeless American motoring icon. Cord offered the 810 and 812
series in various open and closed body styles, ranging from the
sporty two-seat Sportsman convertible to the luxurious
long-wheelbase Custom Berline. This 1937 Cord 812 is a superb
example of the elegant Beverly Sedan and is one of the best we've
have had the pleasure to offer. Finished in a gorgeous shade of
dark blue over blue leather trim, this 812 wears a
lovingly-maintained, high-quality restoration, and is an ACD Club
#1 Certified car. It has known history back to the 1950s and has
been in the care of one passionate owner for over twenty years. It
was in their hands that it received its high-quality restoration,
and ever since, it has been lovingly maintained and enjoyed in ACD
Club and other concours events. The restoration has mellowed
slightly with time and use yet remains in superb condition overall
with a crisp and highly attractive character. Beautiful dark blue
paintwork complements the Beverly sedan's sophisticated, elegant
profile. The finish quality is excellent, applied to straight
panels with even, consistent gaps. Gordon Buehrig used brightwork
purely to accent the form, with chrome appearing only on the
bumpers, grille trim, windscreen surround, wheels, and minor
hardware. This car wears excellent chrome plating all around, with
lovely straight bumpers, and correct full wheel covers. The
luxurious cabin is trimmed in beautiful dark blue leather with gray
piping and accents. Seats and door panels feature correct patterns
and stitching; all finished to a high standard. Some light creasing
is visible on the driver's seat, consistent with the car's history
of on-road enjoyment. Dark blue carpets bound in gray were selected
to complement the leather and are in superb order in the front and
rear. The owners chose a distinct and beautiful matching blue
leather headlining, which provides a striking finishing touch to
the luxurious cabin. All Cord 812s feature the beautiful
engine-turned alloy instrument panel, which looks particularly
stunning against this car's dark blue dash and French gray steering
wheel. The instruments and switches all appear in good order, and
even the original radio works as it should. The delicate H-pattern
shifter operates the pre-select gearbox with a satisfying
mechanicalclickthrough the miniaturized gate. The Lycoming-supplied
L-head V8 engine presents in excellent condition and is properly
detailed with the correct clamps, hardware, wiring, and paint
finishes. The engine bay is neat and orderly, displaying a light
patina that is appropriate for a car that has been driven and
enjoyed. It runs and drives very well, and the history file
includes meticulous documentation of nearly every service and
maintenance task performed since the restoration. We rarely
encounter Beverly Sedans so well restored and lovingly maintained.
This outstanding example is sure to bring much joy to its next
caretaker, much as it has for the past twenty years. Offers welcome
