Ghia is VW's best car. €"Drivetribe, 2019 Setting aside the
boyhood lust for this Ferrari or that Lamborghini, every true
enthusiast knows the appeal of driving a slow car fast. The
Drivetribe's Karmann Ghia featured review quoted above concluded:
VW went for a sports car that was not only beautiful, but it could
almost always be driven to its limits. The only way today's cars
will be able to be driven like that is on a track. A Bloomberg
review in 2016 captured more of the Karmann Ghia's abundant charms:
The cars were special because they gave upper-middle-class drivers
an option to drive something that looked much more expensive than
it was-a singular option to drive real Italian design. They didn't
change much over their run, which seems fitting because the
positive public response upon their debut made them one of
America's most-imported cars of all time. Offered here in deep blue
metallic paint is a 1969 Karmann Ghia convertible that's been
restored, completely refurbished, and tastefully upgraded in a
number of respects, including its re-paint, interior refurbishment,
and engine enhancements. The car's re-paint was professionally
executed and the results are obvious. The finish and shine is
uniform and appealing to the eye across every body panel and looked
at from every angle. Bumpers were removed front and back adding to
the appreciation of the pure Italian design statement. The
remaining chrome trim shows beautifully and the emblems stand out.
Recently, a Jalopnik writer opined that the Karmann Ghia rear-deck
badge is the most beautifully rendered automobile logo ever. This
car's black fabric convertible top (operated manually) is in
excellent condition and its color is a nice complement to the deep
blue paint on the body. Inside, the car's modifications stand out.
The custom blue-and-black upholstery makes for an appealing
retro-style statement. The door treatments are especially striking
with speakers perfectly integrated. A bright red aftermarket
steering wheel is mounted. The body-color-painted dash retains the
simplicity of the original design enhanced with an Eclipse stereo
head unit backed up by rear speakers hidden behind the small back
seat, and backed up by an Infinity amplifier located out of sight
in the front trunk. The car's engine has been fully restored and
treated to any number of chrome enhancements. Few VW engines ever
looked this good. The extended dual exhaust pipes let onlookers
know there's something special beneath the lid. The car's
undercarriage is virtually rust-free, clean, and properly laid out.
The extensive underbody panel is similarly free of damage or signs
of abuse. With just under 57,000 miles on its odometer (under 1,200
miles per-year on average), it's pretty clear that prior owners
have given this Karmann Ghia the care and attention it deserves.
The more than 170 high-definition photographs available at the
Garage Kept Motors website faithfully present the car. In the same
way, the short walk-around-and-startup video captures the engine
note. Of course, the best way to assess the car is with a visit to
our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom for an up-close look. We
encourage prospective purchasers to make the trip, and we ask only
