Intro
Since its inception, Lamborghini has always had a flare for the dynamic. From the Miura to the Diablo, the small Italian manufacturer has always been more theatrical than a Broadway musical. Part of the allure has always been the limited availability of their models. As an example, the Gallardo, Lamborghini’s best selling model, had a ten year production run and 14,022 models were made. By comparison Honda made approximately 650,000 Civics...in 2008. To celebrate the success of the Gallardo, Lamborghini ended its production with several special editions. One of those special editions was called the LP 570-4 Performante Spyder. A name this incendiary makes room for a lot of high expectations and this car definitely does not disappoint.
Interior
This being a Performante, some of the most obvious weight saving measures are apparent in the cockpit. Alcantar is used liberally on the dashboard, seats and throughout the cockpit for its luxurious feel and the fact that it's lighter than leather. As expected the finishing and gold stitching are flawlessly executed and preserved in immaculate, like-new condition. Where the Alcantara ends is where the carbon fibre begins. The door panels, centre console and seats are all constructed with the strong and ultra light weight material helping this car shave precious pounds and give the interior a dominant look from any angle. While this car has been stripped of weight, it hasn’t been stripped of features. Navigation, dual zone climate control and single-button adjustable ride height are just some of the features available on this Performante Spyder.
Exterior
Everything about this fast, loud roadster is designed to stand out in a crowd. The exposed carbon fibre theme continues on the exterior of the vehicle, visible on the exaggerated front splitter, the mirrors, side skirts and the rear wing. The convertible top operates quickly and efficiently taking only 20 seconds to open or close. Lamborghini design cues flow deep into the Performante Spyder. Hexagonal shaping is used creatively and can be found in some unassuming locations. The Tricolore badges on the engine cover speak to the heritage and performance of the vehicle and the stance, ride height and overall aggressive body language screams speed and performance even when sitting still.
Mechanics
With a speedometer that goes to 340 and a tachometer with a redline at 8500 one would rightly have high expectations for this car. Gladly Lamborghini was able to produce yet another vehicle that is as thrilling to drive as it is to look at. The 562hp 5.2L V10 engine is capable of doing 0-60 mph (100kph) in just 3.9 seconds, 0-120mph (200kph) in just 12 seconds and has a top speed of 201mph (324kph). The all-wheel drive system ensures that all the power gets to the road, losing little traction in the process and massive 15 inch disc-brakes have been installed to slow the car down safely and effectively. With only 377 miles (607km) on the odometer everything looks and performs like brand new.
Conclusion
If you’ve ever worried about making an impactful entrance, this car is more than prepared to solve all your problems. The Lamborghini Gallardo Performante Spyder is the automotive equivalent to a high performance athlete. The raw, sporty feel coupled with an open top and a glorious V10 make for a uniquely pantomime driving experience. Driving a Lamborghini has always been described as an elegant experience punctuated by extreme power and precise function. The Gallardo Performante Spyder is a thrilling iteration of this power and precision put together in a positively seductive package.
