Vehicle Description
2001 Plymouth Prowler
In December 2023 Hagerty released its list of Bull Market
collectibles - the 10 best collector cars to buy right now. And the
Plymouth Prowler made the list! They wrote: "Perhaps surprisingly,
members of Gen X, (born between 1965 and 1980), are now trickling
into the Prowler, slowly supplanting the boomers who were the
initial target when the car was conceived.". That may be true as
Prowlers are consistent sellers at Classic Auto Mall, but we find
the demographic may be wider than Gen X.
For consignment, a 1 owner 2001 Plymouth Prowler with a title
verified 39,495 actual miles and unique customizations that set it
apart from other Prowlers. The aftermarket has provided a lot of
opportunities for Prowler owners to personalize their rides but
even in stock configuration, these are special cars that even
Hagerty has put their seal of approval on. Our car has some awards
under its belt including: 2007 Wildwood Boardwalk Nationals Top 40,
Chryslers @ Carlisle 1st Place, and 2014 Wildwood Boardwalk Spring
Classic Top 40
Exterior
A total of 3,142 Prowlers were sold in 2001 and of them, nearly 1/3
were painted Prowler Orange Metallic Pearlcoat. So to differentiate
his car, this owner added a TGF aftermarket grille and side panels.
The front bumpers have been deleted and a custom LED turn signals
have been added. Chrome front suspension dresses things up a bit
and looks great with the reflective backing of the headlights and
chrome wheels which have staggered dimensions with 17-inch in front
and 20-inch in back. Wide rear tires, flared fenders, and straight
dual exhaust tips enhance the incredibly wide tail end of the car
that never ceases to impress. Painted brake calipers, to match the
body, are a nice touch and the canvas black top complements the
black rock guard on the back fenders. Imperfections include some
curb rash on the wheels and a small hole in the soft top.
Interior
On the door panels we find more customization in the form of body
colored insert and speakers, and custom door pockets. Chrome door
sill covers have been added. Black leather bucket seats are in fine
condition and provide a comfortable perch, embossed with the
Prowler logo and topped with headrests dressed in chrome. Behind
the seats, speakers and an 8" subwoofer. The steering wheel wears a
leather cover and shares real estate on the column with a
tachometer and transmission temperature gauge. All other gauges,
including the speedometer, are found in a body colored panel in the
center of the dashboard. A chrome knob tops the shifter which sits
in a chrome base in the center console behind the AM/FM/cassette
radio with CD changer and A/C controls in the standard center
stack. Black low pile carpet covers the floor and looks fresh, and
the trunk is also lined but there is limited room for storage.
Drivetrain
A 3.5 liter V6 engine resides under the tapered hood and is rated
at 253 horsepower. Our engine bay shows some custom painting on the
valve covers, radiator support, intake plenum, engine bay braces,
and suspension springs. It makes the otherwise standard engine show
worthy! The engine is fuel injected and tied to a 4-speed automatic
transmission with AutoStick, located at the back of the car. Power
disc brakes occupy the front and rear.
Undercarriage
Wonderfully clean underneath with the box frame exposed in the
front and back while belly pans taking up much of the underneath.
As noted, the transmission is out back, and a transmission cooler
is mounted on the rear between the exhaust. The dual exhaust comes
from the engine and then runs side by side down the middle under a
heat shield and through a stock style muffler, to then split wide
to exit beyond the rear valance. Independent suspension with coil
overshandle the task in front and in the back.
Drive-Ability
Prowlers provide modern comfort in a unique configuration and
although scorned for their engine, we find them quick and great
handling cars. Sure you won't beat a Viper, but this is a
respectable amount of power in an exceptional handling car. And
during our short test drive, everything worked as advertised.
Visibility with the top up takes some warming up to, but with the
top down, the sky is quite literally the limit.
This is the modern hot rod climbing higher on the collectability
chart. Wild enough to get attention wherever it goes yet tame
enough to drive daily, this may be the best retro car produced in
the past 25 years. No one can deny its exotic looks which will
never look dull, be it completely stock, or fully customized. Pick
one up now so in 10 years you won't be saying, "Shoulda, coulda,
woulda..."
